Can Old Age Security be garnished by creditors?

Saturday, March 21, 2009 by Judy Scott

Question

Can Old Age Security (income asisstance)be garnisheed by creditors?

The only creditor who can garnish your Old Age Security is Canada Revenue Agency.  However, once it's deposited into a bank account, those funds can be seized by any creditor who has a judgment against you or, if you owe money to the same financial institution that your money is deposited with, that financial institution can seize the funds and apply them against your debt with them.
