Debt Calculator

  1. $ A debt is 'unsecured' if you did not sign anything allowing the lender to put a lien on your vehicle, furniture, or other property that you own. Examples of 'unsecured debts' are: credit cards, lines of credit that are not registered against your house, student loans, bank overdrafts, etc. It is important not to include debts such as a mortgage, vehicle loan, or auto lease - those are considered 'secured debts'.
  2. $ This is the amount you actually receive when you cash or deposit your pay cheque or EI cheque or other income; the amount that's left for you after all taxes and similar deductions have been taken off. If you are paid twice a month, enter the total of the two cheques. If you're self-employed, your 'net income after tax' would be the amount left over after you have paid your business expenses, income taxes and CPP for the month. In Quebec, the Quebec Pension Plan (RRQ) applies instead of CPP
  3. $ This is the amount your spouse actually receives when they cash or deposit their pay cheque or EI cheque or other income; the amount left for your spouse after all taxes and similar deductions have been taken off. If your spouse is paid twice a month, enter the total of the two cheques. If your spouse is self-employed, 'net income after tax' would be the amount left over after they have paid their business expenses, income taxes and CPP for the month.
  4. $
    1. Expenses related to a medical condition (for example, insulin, blood pressure medication, etc.)
    2. Child or spousal support payments
    3. Day care costs
    4. Employment expenses that are included on a Form T2200 (for example, if you are required to provide your own vehicle in order to visit clients)
  5. Anyone who lives with you who relies on your income for some or all of their living expenses (or on whose income you rely on for some or all of your living expenses). Normally, your spouse and your children are considered members of your household. Roommates who share expenses equally are not usually considered members of the same household.
